Gas Stove Installation Regulations in SA

A gas stove and even a gas hob can be quite expensive. And for good reason, with the latest gas ranges incredibly well styled, they have beautiful features that will fit any kitchen for that home chef and professionals alike.

Gas Stove Installation

Just as incredible is the fact that some home owners will want to install the gas fittings, piping and gas connections for their new gas stove themselves.

Not only is this illegal, but you place your new gas stove, your home and the lives of your family and pets at risk.

Piped gas connections can be extremely dangerous if installed incorrectly. It is also very important that the various components of the gas installation are safely situated and safe distances are maintained between these and electricity outlets, ventilation outlets, pool pump and air conditioner motors, boundary walls and open gullies.

When more than one gas appliance is connected to the same line, the different volumes of LP gas demanded by the different gas appliances for optimum operation must be allowed for and these calculations can make the difference between a working solution and a dangerous one.

Your insurance will not cover you if you do not have a licensed professional do your gas installation for you. In addition the warranty on your new gas hob or gas oven will be voided without a professional gas installation certificate.

Gas installation Regulations

By law every home with a gas installation is required to have a gas certificate of compliance which is issued by a registered gas installer making that gas installation safe and legally conforming to the South African gas regulations (SANS regulation 10087-1:2013).

Incidentally, a gas certificate of compliance (COC) is also required when you sell your house, so it makes financial and common sense to have your gas installation done correctly and legally the first time.

Although we identify with the need of South Africans to do things themselves, (DIY sometimes = Destroy it Yourself) the gas regulations are there to protect everyone, as safety is the first and foremost objective in all gas installations.
